My research is focused on the study of the innate immune system which protects the host from infection or injury by launching inflammation. My current project is the investigation of cytosolic pattern recognition receptor pathways in neutrophils. Even though neutrophils are critical for antimicrobial immunity, innate immune sensing pathways in those cells are poorly understood. I especially focus on inflammasomes, which detect cytosolic contamination or perturbations and subsequently activate caspase-1 or caspase-11. I try to identify the role of inflammasome components or pathways in neutrophils against bacterial infections such as Burkholderia, Shigella, and Yersinia spp. Also, I seek the difference between neutrophils and macrophages in inflammasome activation and cell death during pathogen infection. I expect that my research suggests a future therapeutic strategy to modulate innate immunity by targeting the neutrophil inflammasome components or pathway.
