UAMS now officially has a chapter of the American Society of Microbiology for students and postdoctoral trainees. The chapter aims to encourage young students and early trainees’ to become a part of a community that provides microbial scientists with learning, networking, and career opportunities.
On July 25, UAMS MBIM and the student chapter of ASM hosted their first event to promote networking and social activities amongst summer students rotating in labs here at UAMS. The education level of the students ranged from second year undergraduates to first year medical students. All were invited to sit back and unwind with some pizza, snacks, and other goodies on the fifth floor skybridge. Graduate students and trainees from other departments were also invited to come, providing a forum for the rotating summer students to interact and network with upper level trainees and gain more insight into research here at UAMS. Moving forward the UAMS student ASM chapter plans to host more events tailored towards student interests with the goal of developing a collaborative and inclusive scientific environment. Be on the lookout for flyers and email regarding upcoming social events!
