Personal and Professional Finance for Physicians

Welcome

Dear Soon-to-Be Physicians,

Welcome to Personal and Professional Financial Essentials for Physicians! We’re excited to serve as your course directors. Both of us are physicians at Arkansas Children’s Hospital—Josh is a pediatric cardiologist, and Steve is a pediatric critical care physician—with a shared passion for helping physicians and trainees navigate the complex world of finances.

This course includes lectures by physicians with expertise in finance, as well as content experts, covering essential financial topics tailored specifically to physicians. To enrich your learning experience and respect our speakers, in-person attendance is expected as is filling out the evaluation, which will take less than three minutes. To help you apply what you learn, each of you will create a written financial plan for your first year of internship, to be submitted by around match week (more information to following the second month of the course). Videos for each lecture, along with additional educational materials and resources to assist you in creating your financial plan, will be made available on the website as they are prepared. We have modified the course based on feedback from last year’s class, so we really do pay attention to what you think.

We’re excited to connect with each of you throughout the semester. Please feel free to reach out via email, and we’ll schedule a convenient time to meet. This is a unique time in your life—one where you have more free time and a major transition ahead. We encourage you to make the most of this course. While many topics in medical school may seem unrelated to your future, every one of you will have to manage money. This course may be your only formal financial education, so seize the opportunity to prepare for your future! Both of us have continued to have conversations on these subjects with students from last year’s class and we anticipate doing the same with you guys. We are here as a resource for the future.

Course Directors

Steve M. Schexnayder, M.D.Dr. Steve Schexnayder is a Professor of Pediatrics and Internal Medicine at UAMS/ACH. As a UAMS med/peds-trained physician who now practices pediatric critical care, emergency medicine, and procedural sedation at  ACH, he also practiced outpatient internal medicine at UAMS for the first 20 years of his academic career. He remains board-certified in pediatric critical care, general pediatrics, and internal medicine. He held a number of leadership positions in the UAMS Dept. of Pediatrics through most of his career, including  Section Chief of Critical Care for 20 years,  Vice Chair of Education for approximately a decade, and has been the department’s Executive Vice Chair since 2017.  He is currently Chief of Staff at Arkansas Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Schexnayder’s academic interest is resuscitation education and he serves as a senior member of the Pediatric Task Force of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation. He has been an author of the American Heart Association’s pediatric CPR guidelines for the past 20 years, which are used in approximately 150 countries around the globe. He has won numerous teaching awards including the Dept. of Pediatrics Teacher of the Year, Dept. of Pediatric Educator of the Year, the Dept. of Emergency Medicine Off Service Golden Apple Award, and the College of Medicine’s Master Teacher Award.

A lifelong student of personal finance, he recently completed his credential as a Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC®) and is currently pursuing his certification as an executive coach. Along with Dr. Daily, he assumed leadership of this course last year and the two extensively revised the curriculum for the course. His core passion is to facilitate the development of trainees as they become excellent, successful physicians in all aspects of their lives. And even as co-director of this course, he might define financial success differently than you might think.

Most importantly, he is husband to Becky, a retired pediatrician from the ACH ED, dad to four (including a UAMS M2) and granddad (“Stev”) to three. Outside of work, he serves as a lay leader of his church, has led mission work in Central America for 30 years, and is a board member of two non-profit ministries.

He serves as the Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Program Director. He has been recognized for his contributions to education, including receiving the Department of Pediatrics Educator of the Year Award, the Eudice Fontenot Cardiology Fellow Teaching Award, and multiple Red Sash Awards. Dr. Daily has also been invited to speak at multiple national meetings, including the American Academy of Pediatrics National Meeting, and has held several visiting professorships.

In addition to his clinical work in pediatric cardiology, Dr. Daily’s expertise includes teaching financial literacy to medical professionals. He co-directs the Personal and Professional Financial Essentials for Physicians course and regularly gives lectures on financial topics, helping medical students and physicians develop financial planning knowledge and skills. Dr. Daily has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications on medical education, cardiology, and finance, and he mentors medical trainees in research, which has led to multiple publications.

Dr. Daily holds a Master’s in Medical Education, is board-certified in Pediatric Cardiology, and has a particular interest in enhancing the financial well-being of physicians, an area where he combines his expertise in medical education and financial management.

Dr. Daily is married to Lauren and has four children: Will, Caleb, Abby, and Ellie. In his free time, he enjoys fly fishing, being outdoors, and spending time with his family. He is also actively involved in his church.
