The Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center celebrated its 30th anniversary with a symposium held on Tuesday, October 29, 2024. The event brought together esteemed speakers to share Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center’s history, ongoing research, and future directions in parental and child nutrition. The symposium commenced with remarks from key stakeholders in nutrition and agriculture, including Senator John Boozman, US Senator for Arkansas and Ranking Member of the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee, as well representatives from the US Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Mr. Archie Tucker, Southeast Area Director, and Dr. Pamela Starke-Reed, Acting Associate Administrator and Deputy Administrator for Nutrition, Food Safety and Quality.
Attendees were given a historical perspective from Dr. Thomas Badger, Founding Director and Professor Emeritus who provided insights into the process by which Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center was founded, which was complemented and further described as it relates to the current nutrition research landscape by an overview of the NIH Office of Nutrition Research, presented by its Director, Dr. Andrew Bremer. Cutting-edge research and future directions for the Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center rounded out discussion with presentations by Dr. Sharon Donovan from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign on Precision Nutrition, and by Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center Faculty Members Drs. Aline Andres, Taren Massey-Swindle, Elisabet Børsheim and Craig Porter who presented on Maternal and Pediatric Nutrition, Community Implementation, Pediatric Fitness and Lifestyle Factors, and Animal Models of Metabolism, respectively.
