The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH) is looking for a dynamic Vice Chair of Research to oversee the significant resources and growth of the research enterprise in the Department of Pediatrics.
Essential Job Functions
- Develop and implement short- and long-term strategic plans for the Department of Pediatrics research mission in conjunction with the Chair and ACRI leadership
- Collaborate with leaders within, and external to, the Department of Pediatrics to drive faculty curiosity and create a research culture that is strategic and innovative
- Build collaborative research relationships with a diverse group of academic, health system, and community partners to promote the department’s research agenda including key stakeholders at UAMS College of Medicine; UAMS Translational Research Institute; and the ACRI
- Identify funding opportunities to advance clinical, translational, workforce and educational research
- Represent the Department of Pediatrics in College of Medicine research initiatives
- Review and approve departmental research initiatives for budget and scope as part of multi-level ACRI approval of research activities
- Identify and develop junior faculty with promising research trajectories
- Design and implement the department research curriculum for students, residents, fellows, and faculty in conjunction with the Vice Chair of Education and Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs
- Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion in all areas of the department’s research mission, including recruitment and retention of diverse faculty, research team members, and research participants
- Collaborate with strategic marketing and the Arkansas Children’s Foundation to elevate community and donor knowledge of research activities within the department
Qualifications
- Experience with extramurally funded research, including either human subjects or bench research; clinical trials; qualitative and mixed methods study design; and/or implementation science
- Active, successful personal research portfolio
- Experience with research regulatory infrastructure, such as Institutional Review Board; Institutional Biosafety Committees; Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, or similar
- M.D., Ph.D., or M.D./Ph.D. with at least 5 years of experience in successful leadership of research programs. For MD applicants’ additional requirements include board certification and fellowship training as applicable to specialty and if subspecialty trained and possess or be eligible for an Arkansas medical license
- Strong interpersonal skills, the capacity to work collaboratively and effectively with others, experience managing space and financial resources, and an ability to inspire colleagues and staff to achieve excellent results
- A history of successful mentorship of junior faculty
Practice is based at Arkansas Children’s Hospital
The Arkansas Children’s System includes two hospitals, a statewide care network of clinics and outreach programs, a research institute and a foundation. ACH is the only pediatric health system in the state of Arkansas, providing coverage to the state’s children from birth to age 21. The hospital staff consists of mor ethan 500 faculty, 200 residents and 4,400 support staff.
