Participants will learn how to frame a PICO question and search the medical literature based on that question; how to critically appraise journal articles with various study designs (therapy, harm, diagnosis, prognosis, systematic review and meta-analysis); how clinical practice guidelines are developed using the GRADE method; and explore how to utilize the principles of evidence-based medicine in clinical practice, teaching, and research.
Enrollment will be limited to 30 participants, each of whom will receive a course syllabus plus a copy of the Users’ Guide to the Medical Literature, 3rd ed. as well as breakfast and lunch.
- Identify the necessary steps in conducting a medical literature search
- Develop a PICO question and search the medical literature based on that question
- Identify, locate, and critically appraise published literature
- Compare and contrast the various types of research studies, such as: therapy, harm, systematic review and meta-analysis
- Discuss how clinical practice guide lines are developed using the GRADE method
- Explore how to use the principals of EBM in clinical practice, teaching and research
